The past few months have been something very special for the Dog at Wingham, first winning Best for Food at the Great British Pub Awards in the summer of 2019 and made it onto the 2020 Top 50 Gastropubs list too.
Head chef Samuel McClurkin has quite the pedigree and has worked alongside chefs, including current number two chef on this list – Stephen Harris from the Sportsman.
McClurkin’s dishes are clever, yet easy approachable, and offer maximum flavour and satisfaction with every mouthful.
If you’re lucky enough to be in the gastropub when the lobster raviolo in a lobster bisque is on the menu, then snap it up without hesitation. That and the kitchen’s freshly made focaccia bread make this pub’s food extra special.
The pub has a very strong drinks offer with something for everyone and also has rooms.
On the menu, you can expect to find dishes including beetroot gazpacho with preserved celery, pickled heritage beetroots and nasturtium; black garlic risotto with pickled cauliflower, truffle and puffed rice; and seared king scallops with a chestnut velouté, bottarga and wood sorrel for starters.
For mains, dishes have included pulled mushroom and salt-baked celeriac suet pudding, roast hispi cabbage and pickled walnut with an oat cream velouté; Gorgonzola and basil gnocchi, pesto, crispy hen’s egg, pine nuts and kale; and fillet of brill, crispy potato, kimchi, choi sum, celeriac purée and tom yum bisque.
Desserts have included toasted coconut and green cardamom rice pudding with lime and muscovado sugar; spiced apple souffle with buttermilk ice cream; and salted caramel panna cotta with macadamia crumble and espresso ice cream.
