A triple threat, the Black Bull in Sedbergh, Cumbria, has great food, a smashing drinks offer and a fine selection of luxurious rooms to choose from.
The gastropub’s website summarises the offering as this: “Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend away with your partner or travelling for business, our team will be on hand to help you make the most of your stay with us.
“You may be greeted as a guest but we can guarantee you will leave us as a firm friend… especially as the infectious personality of every member of our team is hard to ignore.
“Come and meet some of the people behind the scenes who are here to look after you during your stay.”
Its food is focused on slow-grown meats sourced from traditional breeds from the local area, as well as dishes with a twist that are inspired by the fusion of head chef Nina Rich’s Japanese heritage and husband James Ratcliffe’s Dales upbringing.
Not to mention, this is the pub’s first year on the Top 50 Gastropubs list and from what we’ve seen, we’re expecting great things in the future, especially considering the Black Bull’s admirable entry at number 26.
Examples of food from one of the pub’s evening menus include: aubergine, miso, turnip kimchi and onion; slow cooked beef rib, polenta, IPA cheese sauce and nasturtium caper; and hare, truffle and smoked turnip for starters.
Mains to choose from have included Howgill Hereford beef sirloin, bilberry, smoked almond and broccoli; swordfish, brown shrimp, black garlic and corn; and wild venison, blackberry, parsnips and sprouts.
Desserts have consisted of sheep’s mousse, white chocolate and raspberry; sticky toffee pudding and ice cream; and salted caramel with peanut and banana.
