The Pipe and Glass

James and Kate Mackenzie’s Yorkshire pub, as you should rightly expect, offers hearty and moreish dishes only, cooked from the heart.

Think locally shot game, freshly caught seafood and Barnsley chops the size of small children, it truly is fantastic.

The menu ranges from traditional, but polished, takes on pub classics to more extravagant restaurant-style offerings.

James is well known in the culinary world and is involved in many aspects from encouraging youngsters to consider a career in kitchens, as well as working alongside Tom Kerridge at Pub in the Park.

The pub has expanded its accommodation offering with four new stylish rooms converted from old lambing buildings based just a few minutes from the main pub.

Menu highlights have included slow-cooked crispy shoulder of lamb with mutton and kidney faggot, lamb belly boulangere, butternut squash, redcurrants and barley; Yorkshire game and pistachio terrine with pickled pear, raisins, mulled wine jelly, pistachio crisps and game ‘tea’; and braised onion with mushroom and Cheddar ‘rarebit’ with leeks, smoked baby onions, hazelnuts and soubise cream.

Desserts have included white chocolate and cranberry bread and butter pudding with spiced clementine Suzette and cardamom custard; liquorice panna cotta with treacle roasted figs, parkin and pistachios; and baked dark chocolate ‘millionaire’ pudding with salted burnt butter ice cream.

The Pipe & Glass also offers a mammoth wine list, which has won several awards – including the Estrella Damm’s Top 50 Gastropubs Wine List of the Year 2015 – for the length and breadth of bins available.

The pub also has a selection of seriously luxurious, impeccably designed boutique hotel rooms, making it ideal for a romantic or just plain gluttonous getaway.

The Pipe & Glass’s charm isn’t just that you’ll want to come back, it’s that you won’t want to leave.

It is one of the largest gastropubs on the list and is surrounded by idyllic Yorkshire countryside – providing James’s kitchen with some of the UK’s finest produce.

James’ and fellow Yorkshire chef Andrew Pern’s Two Chefs ale is on draft and is the main flavour in the pub’s hearty gravies.

Private dining and function rooms are also available for those who want to host a party in style.
