The list— No. 5

The Mariners Public House

One of celebrity chef Paul Ainsworth’s famous venues – the Mariners, which is based in Rock – was also the winner of the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs Newcomer category last year.

2020 was the first year the pub has made it onto the Top 50 Gastropubs list and what an entry it has made, coming in at number 23 and now sliding right up into the top five.

The pub has a simple motto on its website which, in short, is to provide guests with warmth and happy memories, driven by food that puts a smile on your face alongside drinks that put a spring in your step.

In the kitchen, head chefs Joe Rozier and Tom Dawes are responsible for the brigade of chefs who consistently produce dishes to a high standard throughout service.

The pub has a selection of eight menus to consider, from the À la Carte, Children, Collection, Cornish Cream Tea, Gluten-Free, Sunday Lunch, Vegan, and Vegetarian, meaning a lot of needs have been catered for.

Of the gastronomic empire Paul and Emma Ainsworth have built, Paul says: “Starting this next exciting chapter here in Padstow, we couldn’t be more grateful for the support from our loyal customers and friends.

“Every day we learn new things that we bring to the business, allowing us to keep improving what we do.

“While I strive for excellence in the kitchen, Emma’s expert eye for the fine details has helped us provide those added little touches that our customers so often notice.

“Whether it’s being hands on, or working from afar, her wise words always help keep us grounded.

“Our team are the family behind us who have supported and believed in our vision right from the beginning.”

From the À La Carte menu, guests can start with dishes that have included char-grilled campaillou rye sourdough, aged balsamic and extra virgin olive oil; fried ‘Whitebait Tom Kerridge’, Marie Rose sauce; and fried buttermilk chicken, garam masala with chipotle mayonnaise.

Mains have included spiced roast cauliflower with couscous, cucumber yogurt and raisins; Goan masala south Indian-style curry with slow cooked chicken, naan bread, kachumba and braised rice; and slow cooked Tamworth pork loin, roasted hispi cabbage, black pudding and bacon, Pommery mustard mash, cider apples and gravy.
