Last year’s Newcomer of the Year award winner, the Swan Inn Chiddingfold, Surrey, blew the judges’ minds with the creativity of its food and the warmth of the welcome into the gastropub.
This fantastic site was the deserved winner of the award, after husband and wife team took the pub on in 2016.
Chef Aaron Foster is something of a genius, putting together simplistic descriptions of dishes that turn out to be nothing short of masterpieces on arrival at the table.
The Swan Inn is both charming and traditional, and the perfect place for a quiet drink with friends or a delicious three-course meal to celebrate a special occasion – or simply to indulge.
Close to the South Downs, the gastropub is also ideal for walkers who can take advantage of the rooms on offer.
Menus cover breakfast, lunch, dinner, Sunday lunch, bar snacks and desserts. There is also a supper club, which allows diners to sample some off-the-menu dishes from Aaron.
Diners visiting the Swan Inn for dinner can expect to see meals including: beer braised pork and foie gras press with carrot remoulade and nectarine chutney; smashed avocado with an umami dressing, watercress puree and rye croute; and heirloom tomato salad with feta, basil aioli and shaved red onion to start.
Mains could be: pan roasted skate wing with caper beurre noisett and local new potatoes; seared calves liver with celery & potato hash, runner beans, streaky bacon and onion jus; and blue cheese & walnut pastilla with charred celery heart, geode puree, oven dried tomatoes and lovage dressing.
Dishes from the ample desserts menu include date sponge pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream; dark chocolate marquise with salted caramel ice cream; and espresso semifrreddo with brioche doughnuts.
The pub also has a wide range of dessert wines and sherries, brandies, ports and liqueurs, which pair well with the desserts or are a perfect alternative to a pudding.
